Pretty much everyone who smokes knows it is bad for their health. After smoking a while, pretty much everyone who smokes would prefer to quit. It’s expensive, it is very inconvenient, many smokers feel ostracized by society. Who willingly keeps a habit that makes them feel like a 2nd class citizen.
Why do we seem to think education is the key to helping someone become a non-smoker? They already want to become a non-smoker.
In recent years, there have been some advances that have helped a lot of people. Things like patches and nicotine gum have been used by many to become nonsmokers. But, for some, beating the demon nicotine proves harder. It is not that they are weak or lack willpower. We have to look deeper.
When we do, we find that stress–unmanaged stress–is much higher among smokers than non-smokers. Stress reduces willpower. Stress makes it more difficult to achieve goals.
Stress management skills that help individuals reduce stress in healthy ways will also help them achieve their desire of becoming a non-smoker.
