It i time to be the change you want to see in the world. Do you feel awe at Nelson Mandela’s ability to forgive? Does it make you feel as if he was more than you could ever be? Do you realize that what he did was make a conscious, deliberate choice about who he would be? We all have that ability. When we see someone like Mandela as better than us, as different from us, it is choosing to believe that we are not able to make a choice like that. It gives us an excuse to keep bitterness, blame, and hate in our hearts. But the truth is …..
Creating Racism: Are you? There are two ways parents create racism in the world. Teach their children to be racist against those who seem different, and Teach their children that others’ actions toward them are motivated by racism. The first way is generally recognized, discussed, and recognized by many as wrong. The second one is ignored. Increasing awareness of the second way racism is created is the purpose of this article. Although the intention, in the 2nd way, is not to harm the child’ life experience–that is often the outcome. How we perceive reality is an individual experience. The way I perceive any given situation or event will not be …..
We tend to address topics about our health in a vacuum. Perhaps it has to do with the Descartes split where the connection between mind and body was tossed out and our bodies began being treated as if they were a machine–like a car or a toaster. We know better. We live in bodies. We know that when we’re real nervous–maybe before a job interview or a speech–that our stomach can get upset. That is a perfect sign of mind-body interaction. Or, we all know the difference between perspiration from exercise or exertion and perspiration from nerves. That is another sign of the mind-body connection. Fortunately, science is once again …..
Pretty much everyone who smokes knows it is bad for their health. After smoking a while, pretty much everyone who smokes would prefer to quit. It’s expensive, it is very inconvenient, many smokers feel ostracized by society. Who willingly keeps a habit that makes them feel like a 2nd class citizen. Why do we seem to think education is the key to helping someone become a non-smoker? They already want to become a non-smoker. In recent years, there have been some advances that have helped a lot of people. Things like patches and nicotine gum have been used by many to become nonsmokers. But, for some, beating the demon nicotine proves harder. …..
The old paradigm of calories in – calories out = BMI has been revised. Scientists are learning more about how our emotions affect how our bodies process the food we eat and that higher levels of stress make our bodies store fat. Depression is epidemic around the world right now. The number of individuals who are depressed in any given year is approaching double digit numbers. The number of individuals who think about committing suicide in any give year is high and climbing. The problem is complex but the solution is simple. 1. In our society we value and honor the Stoic approach to feelings that don’t feel good. THIS IS UNHEALTHY. 2. We stigmatize people who seek professional help. DO YOU REALIZE THAT LOW EMOTIONAL STATES ARE THE ROOT CAUSE OF HORRENDOUS CRIMES? I am not saying that anyone and everyone who feels depressed will become front page news–but some of …..
The belief that weight is a function of calories in and calories out has been given the boot by science. Yet, we already knew it didn’t work, right? Some people seem to be able to eat anything and maintain the same weight while others barely eat and struggle to loose weight. The Good news is that science has provided more insight and there is reason to celebrate. Stress makes it more difficult to loose weight. How do they know this? There are chemical changes in our bodies based on what we’re thinking and on our mood. Emotional states that are less than happy cause chemical changes that make our bodies …..
Compared with what we ought to be, we are only half awake. Our fires are damped, our drafts are checked. We are making use of only a small part of our physical and mental resources . . . Stating the thing broadly, the human individual lives far within his limits. ~ William James Learn to become more of your potential. Learn to thrive more, now.
Make Play OK Our society has developed an unhealthy paradigm for adults–that mature adults don’t play. We pay to go to gyms and walk or run on treadmills when, if it weren’t for our conception of play as “childish” we could just go outside and play. Then, we have to make deliberate efforts to go outside to combat the epidemic levels of depression. There is nothing wrong with adults playing. Mature adults are individuals who are responsible for themselves. The concept of putting aside childish things like playing just to prove to others that we are adults is passé. A paradigm shift that Makes Play OK would do tremendous good for health and well-being. …..
